Elie Bleu Snowy Owl Humidor — 250 Cigars
The 250-cigar Snowy Owl humidor is the rarest and most complete expression of the collection: limited to 100 numbered pieces worldwide, and the only format in which the full snow scene is realized. In the 110-cigar version, the composition delivers the owl against the dark forest background. In the 250-cigar version, the larger body of the humidor allows the atelier to complete the scene — to bring the snowy expanse into the composition, the arctic landscape that gives the bird its name and its visual identity. The snow is rendered in bleached, wavy-grained sycamore, the grain of the wood suggesting the movement of wind across snow, the texture alive in a way a painted or lacquered surface cannot achieve.
A Complete Composition
The 250-cigar format provides the Faubourg Saint-Antoine atelier with horizontal scope that the 110-cigar format cannot offer. That scope is used: the grey-stained redgum background evokes deep forest to one side, and the white sycamore snow extends across the piece in a curve that frames the owl's figure between two worlds — the dark forest from which it emerges at night and the open snowy territory it commands. Halfwheel, covering PCA 2026 where this piece was first shown, noted the curved contrast running down the front side of the humidor as the most impressive thing in the Elie Bleu booth.
Marquetry and Materials
The snowy owl is built from grey-stained redgum (the forest background), blue-stained sycamore (shadow and atmospheric marking), and white-stained sycamore (the bird's pale body plumage). The eyes are orange and black-stained sycamore — the orange holding its warmth even across a distance from which the other colors have merged into pattern. The beak and talons are black mother-of-pearl: the material chosen for its hardness and its edge, the parts of the bird defined by their cutting precision rendered in the marquetry material that holds its precision longest.
The result is a piece that works at two distances: from across a room, as an owl emerging from night, a figure against dark; and up close, as a study in the atelier's technique — each material chosen for what it can hold that another cannot.
Emily Dickinson
A line from Emily Dickinson's Wild Nights appears on the front face. The poem — with its image of wild nights as luxury, of winds as futile against a heart in port, of rowing toward something in Eden — was chosen for the richness of its resonances: the night the snowy owl inhabits, the wild that is its natural condition, and something beyond the literal, something in the poem's stretched tension between harshness and sensuality that the atelier found worth placing on an object built to last.
