Stefano Ricci SR Dual Flame Lighter — Mother of Pearl / Palladium
Nacre is produced by the same process as the pearl: a mollusk secretes layer upon layer of aragonite crystals and the organic protein conchiolin, building up laminations that are each roughly half a micron thick. It is those laminations — hundreds or thousands of them — that create the optical effect known as iridescence. Light enters the surface, reflects off multiple layers at slightly different depths, and exits as a spectral shimmer that no two observers see from exactly the same angle. The material has been prized in decorative objects for thousands of years, from ancient Chinese lacquerware to nineteenth-century European objets de luxe, because that iridescence cannot be manufactured. It exists only in the animal, and only in the slow, patient way the animal builds it.
Stefano Ricci selects real Mother of Pearl for the details on this dual-flame lighter. The word "real" carries weight here: the market for MOP-detailed goods is heavily populated with synthetic alternatives — plastic laminates that approximate the surface color without capturing the depth. The nacre on this lighter is genuine, which means the iridescence shifts as the piece moves in the hand, catches different light sources across the length of a smoking session, and develops its own character over time rather than remaining static.
The Material
Mother of Pearl in palladium context is a natural pairing. The cool white-silver of palladium finishing and the cool luminous white of nacre share a tonal register without competing: the metal is precise and matte where the nacre is organic and reflective. The two materials read as complementary rather than contrasting, giving the lighter a coherent visual language that is quiet and assured.
Dual Flame System
The lighter carries two flame modes — soft flame and torch flame — accessible from a single piece. The soft flame is appropriate for cigars lit at the table, in still air, with the unhurried pace the material deserves. The torch flame handles outdoor conditions: wind, the open air of a terrace, the environments in which a lighter must perform reliably regardless of conditions. Both functions in one object, without compromise to either.
Palladium Finishing
Palladium finishing is applied throughout the hardware — trim, mechanism, and fitting — consistent with the Mother of Pearl details and the cool tonal character of the piece as a whole. Palladium holds its appearance over time and resists the oxidation that can compromise gold-tone finishes in daily use.
