S.T. Dupont 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea Small Ashtray — Vanikoro
Not every moment in Jules Verne's novel is about the abyss. In the chapter called "Vanikoro," the Nautilus docks beside an island in the South Pacific, surrounded by one of the most extraordinary barrier reefs described in the novel — an underwater landscape of living coral and rising bubbles, vivid and unhurried. It is the collection's most organic image, and the one most naturally translated into the decorative objects of the smoking table. The small Vanikoro ashtray is the easiest entry into the 20,000 Leagues world — a piece whose imagery is immediately readable and whose scale fits anywhere.
Vanikoro — The Standard Range
The Vanikoro range is the Standard tier of S.T. Dupont's 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea collection, drawing its color and decoration directly from the chapter's reef imagery. Where the Premium Gulf Stream and Pacific pieces use gradient lacquer over wave guilloché to evoke the ocean's movement, Vanikoro uses the coral and bubble motif of the reef itself — a warmer, more literal interpretation of the novel. The royal blue grounds the imagery in the ocean without requiring the deepening gradient of the premium palette.
Royal Blue / Coral and Bubbles
The small Vanikoro ashtray is porcelain, finished in royal blue gloss lacquer with coral and bubble decoration. The coral motif reads as both ornamental and referential — intricate enough to reward attention, simple enough to work as a desk object without demanding it. The bubbles rise through the composition as they would through the water of the reef: upward, light, dispersed.
