Dupont's Le Grand Cling in black lacquer and gold works with this contrast at every level — in the relationship between body and trim, in the guilloché cap where engraved gold detail reads against a lacquered black ground, in the quality of the light the piece returns depending on how it is held.

CLING — Guilloché Under Lacquer

The CLING technique — Color Lacquer IN Guilloché — is the defining craft innovation of this new Le Grand version. The diamond-pattern guilloché is engraved into the cap first, its pyramid facets cut with precision into the brass beneath. The lacquer is then applied over the engraving, filling the channels and settling across the relief of the pattern, building up a surface that has structure beneath its glossy exterior. The result is different from guilloché without lacquer (which is fully exposed) and different from lacquer without guilloché (which is flat): the cap of the Le Grand Cling has a depth and dimension that can be seen in raking light, the engraved pattern visible below the surface like an architectural detail behind glass. The yellow gold finish reveals this depth with particular clarity — the warmth of the gold against the black makes every facet legible.

Black Body / Gold Trim

The body of the Le Grand Cling Black Gold is smooth glossy black natural lacquer — the Maison's signature treatment, applied in successive layers, polished between each application, built to a depth that distinguishes natural lacquer from conventional alternatives. Against the black body, the yellow gold trim and cap finishing stand with the authority that the combination has always carried. S.T. Dupont's 300-step artisanal process and laser welding underlie the construction throughout.

The Famous Cling / Double Ignition

The new Le Grand Cling preserves the cling — S.T. Dupont describes it as "preserving the famous 'cling' that makes it a unique piece." The Le Grand's deeper, more resonant opening sound is unchanged. The double ignition system delivers a soft yellow flame and a torch, both immediately available. A screwdriver is included for user flint replacement.
