The Popoté Technique
Dating to 1953 in S.T. Dupont's Parisian atelier, the Popoté is among the Maison's most distinctive and storied decorative methods. Using a special stamp, a craftsman applies irregular touches to the lacquer surface — each gesture at once precise and deliberately random. The result is a surface that catches light differently from every angle, appearing almost to vibrate, with a depth and dimensionality that no flat lacquer can achieve. The process is the same for every piece; the result is different every time. No two Popoté lighters are identical.
Le Grand
S.T. Dupont's Le Grand is the Maison's larger-format lighter — more generous in the hand, more commanding on the desk, and offering a broader canvas for the decorative techniques that define S.T. Dupont's craftsmanship. On the Le Grand, the Popoté effect is amplified: a larger surface means more of the technique's characteristic depth and movement, more planes of shifting color, more of the irregular texture that makes this method impossible to replicate.
Blue / Yellow Gold
Blue lacquer has a particular relationship with light — absorbing it in the depths, reflecting it at the surface — and the Popoté technique exploits that relationship to full effect. The irregular stamp application creates shifting planes of blue that range from deep to luminous as the lighter moves. Against yellow gold, the effect is warm, lively, and quietly mesmerizing. This is the Popoté collection's most serene expression, but serenity in motion.
