S.T. Dupont Line 1 — Vertical Guilloché / Yellow Gold
The Line 1 is not a new lighter. It is the lighter — the one that S.T. Dupont made first, in the early 1940s, that established what a luxury lighter should be. Adored by a generation of collectors and connoisseurs before the language for such objects had fully formed, the Line 1 defined the weight, the sound, the surface, and the ritual. Then it was set aside. Now it returns, with new volumes, in the hands of a Maison that has had eight decades to understand what it made the first time.
The Vertical Guilloché
The Line 1's signature surface is the vertical guilloché — parallel lines engraved with precision up the body of the lighter, giving it a texture that is both visual and tactile. Run a thumb across the face and the ridges register immediately, the pattern communicating craft before the lighter is even opened. In yellow gold, the vertical lines catch and return the light in warm bands that shift as the lighter moves in the hand. The guilloché does not sit on the surface; it is the surface, engraved into the all-metal body and finished in gold throughout. The result is a lighter that is visually consistent from any angle — no lacquer, no contrast material, just the same warm metal and the lines that organize it.
Heritage in a Yellow Flame
The Line 1 was always a cigarette lighter — designed for the soft, warm flame that was the standard ignition of its era. That original logic is preserved in the new version: the double soft yellow flame provides a broad, gentle light appropriate for cigarettes and for cigars in sheltered conditions. There is no torch in this lighter. There is no need for one. The Line 1 was not made for urgency. It was made for a different relationship with time — the one in which the act of lighting is itself part of the ritual, not an obstacle to it.
The Famous Cling
Opening the Line 1 produces S.T. Dupont's famous cling — the metallic snap on opening that has been the Maison's acoustic signature for generations. In the Line 1's compact format, the cling is immediate and precise, a clean note that carries the whole history of the object in a fraction of a second. It marks the moment of opening the way only S.T. Dupont can.
