Where La Flamme captures fire, La Mer captures water. The two designs in S.T. Dupont's Gradient Collection are conceived as a pair — each representing one of the elemental forces that give the Line 2 lighter its meaning. La Mer is the cooler, deeper counterpart: a tribute to the sea rendered in the lacquer tradition that S.T. Dupont has refined over generations.

The Gradient Collection / USA Exclusive

The Gradient Collection is available exclusively in the United States, produced under S.T. Dupont's plaque décor technique — a construction method that allows the exterior decoration to change freely without affecting the acoustic mechanics inside. Both La Flamme and La Mer are built on this principle: decoration that is genuine, not applied; crafted, not printed. The gradient itself — the way the two blues shift and blend across the body — is the point. It is what makes the lighter recognizable as a Gradient piece, and what gives the La Mer its specific identity.

La Mer

La Mer's gradient moves through cerulean and azure — two blues that carry the feeling of the sea at different hours and different depths. Cerulean is the blue of the sky reflected on the surface; azure is the blue of the water itself when the light is right. Together, they capture what the sea does that no single color can: shift. The gradient on the La Mer body does the same, moving across the lacquer surface the way the color of the ocean moves across the horizon. Silver trim finishes the lighter in a register that reads as naturally aquatic — cool, precise, and without warmth.

The Line 2 Form

The Line 2 has held its proportions — 62 × 37 × 11mm, 130g in brass — since it was introduced, and that consistency is itself a form of craft. The weight is deliberate. The dimensions are not arbitrary. The brass body, lacquered here in cerulean and azure gradient, is substantial in a way that signals seriousness without announcing it. It is a lighter designed to be used, carried, and noticed without trying to be noticed.

The Perfect Ping

Opening the La Mer produces S.T. Dupont's crystalline "Perfect Ping" — the acoustic signature of the Line 2 that has remained unchanged since the lighter's introduction. The plaque décor construction of the Gradient Collection was specifically designed to preserve this sound, ensuring that the decoration on the exterior does not alter the precision of the mechanism inside. The double yellow flame follows. The gas comes from S.T. Dupont's red refill; the flint is the standard black. Personalization is available up to three characters.
