Stefano Ricci SR Dual Flame Lighter — Nail Polish Black / Palladium

There are two ways to use black in an object with hardware: you can contrast it with a warm metal — gold or brass — which produces a relationship that is dynamic and classical, warm metal against cool surface. Or you can pair it with a cool metal — palladium, steel, chrome — and work instead toward unity, two materials that share a tonal register and reinforce rather than interrupt each other. The Gold version of this lighter takes the first approach. The Palladium version takes the second.

Black lacquer and palladium are both cool, both precise, both materials that hold their character without fluctuation. The black of the nail polish finish has the depth that the layered lacquer medium produces — color that reads as interior rather than surface. The palladium hardware has the clean precision of a non-ferrous metal that resists oxidation and holds its silver-white tone across years of use. Together they make an object that is consistent in every respect: one tonal direction, one formal intention, carried through from body to mechanism.

Nail Polish Lacquer

Nail polish is applied to the lighter body as a finishing medium because it is formulated for maximum chromatic depth and gloss at small scale. The black finish it produces has the quality of fine lacquer rather than industrial paint — depth, luminosity under direct light, and a surface that rewards close inspection. Applied to the body of a lighter it holds its position with the same durability the medium is designed to provide.
