To color briar root white is not to conceal it — the grain of the burl is too close and too complex to disappear under any finish. What white does instead is reveal the structure of the wood from a different angle: the tight swirling figure of the burl reads as relief under the pale pigment, the highs and lows of the grain surface catching light differently and creating texture visible across the desk. White briar is the version of this ashtray that foregrounds the material rather than the color — the pigment is present, but it is transparent enough to the wood beneath it that the briar root is what the eye registers first.

White / Gold

White and gold is a pairing with formal history: the colors of ceremony across European traditions, of gilded plasterwork against white walls, of the objects that are most visible against a pale surface. On an ashtray at desk scale, white and gold read as precise and uncluttered — the kind of object that holds its position on a pale or wood surface without competing with its surroundings.
